Daniele Roberto Giacobbe
MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of infectious diseases at the University of Genoa, Italy.

He is also working as an infectious diseases specialist at San Martino Polyclinic Hospital in Genoa and is a member of the directive committee of the Italian Society of Anti-Infective Therapy (SITA).

His main fields of research are severe infections due to difficult-to-treat gram-negative bacteria and invasive fungal diseases in the intensive care unit.

He serves as editor, editorial board member and/or referee for a number of international scientific journals. Past member of the executive committee of the Critically Ill Patients Study Group of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), he enjoys coordinating research projects and working in enthusiastic multicenter, multinational research groups.

Maddalena Peghin
MD, PhD

Medical Doctor and Professor at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of University of Insubria-ASST-Sette Laghi in Varese (Italy).

She is an expert in clinical management of solid organ transplant recipients and is part of the National Transplant Center (CNT) team for infectious disease second opinion for increased risk donors in Italy.

She previously studied for her MD and completed her PhD, specializing in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona and at the University Autonoma of Barcelona.

Dr Peghin has published extensively in the area of infectious diseases and has participated in numerous national and international meetings on topics such as multidrug resistant bacteria, respiratory viral infections  and fungal infections in solid-organ transplant recipients.

Jon Salmanton-García
PhD

Postdoctoral researcher in the Institute of Translational Research, CECAD, University of Cologne and University Hospital Cologne, Cologne, Germany.

He’s member of the ESCMID Fungal Infection Study Group (EFISG), the Respiratory Virus Study Group (ESGREV), and the Study Group for Infections in Compromised Hosts (ESGICH).

He’s keen into studying fungal infections, mainly the invasive ones. During his PhD (2017-2020), he focused on describing the epidemiology of rare invasive fungal infection cases, like mucormycosis, and even rarer ones. He finished the PhD in August 2020, right when the COVID-19 pandemic started. In parallel, he did research in COVID-19 associated pulmonary aspergillosis.

As a postdoctoral researcher, he’s mapping the access to different tools to diagnose and treat fungal infections.
He’s part of the team at the VACCELERATE Consortium, a pan-European initiative where they coordinate and do trials for vaccines across Europe (www.vaccelerate.eu). He’s also in charge of the EPICOVIDEHA/EPIFLUEHA survey, which looks at how viral infections affect people with blood cancers (www.ehaweb.org/covid-19/epicovideha-survey/).

Antonio Vena
MD, PhD

He currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Genoa (Italy), alongside his role as Infectious Diseases specialist at San Martino Policlinic Hospital in Genoa. Additionally, he plays an integral part in the directive committee of the Italian Society of Anti-Infective Therapy (SITA).

His research endeavors are centered around critical areas such severe infections caused by challenging gram-negative bacteria and invasive fungal diseases.

Apart from his clinical and academic roles, he actively contributes to the advancement of scientific knowledge by serving as an editor and referee for numerous prestigious international scientific journals. 

He’s currently member of the ESCMID Fungal Infection Study Group (EFISG), and the Study Group for Infections in Compromised Hosts (ESGICH).
